two months left means the self-evaluation starts kicking in.

i learned (like how the camera has to be ON for the light meter to WORK), i grew, i played. i played, hard--the proof is in roll after roll of technical unimpressiveness, chronicling my falling in love with film (and others) for the first time, again. i grew comfortable with uncomfortable honesty. i learned to share my life with someone, instead of just pretending to.

i'm still learning to deal with the implications of everything i just said. i am still terrified of perfect.

i've been selective with my moments, the ones that i want to keep on film, and the ones i just want to keep. if i had more time/were to improve this project/could start all over again, i would slow it down even more.

is it ridiculous to think that the first ten months of this shit was just a warmup exercise and now things are really starting to get real? growing up's exhausting.

The Year of the Fun, conceived on what has become the traditional New Year's eve of splitting time between two families followed by recreational substance abuse, was initially a simple plan: less analytical, unnecessary seriousness, more fun. Easier said than done for two women with the incurable tendency to philosophize and dissect and discuss serving as the ties that bind a near-ten year friendship.

It began in mid-December with me living up to my history of blind optimism, ignoring back to back to back (to back) failures with the opposite sex and starting all over again (again). I also have a history of using humor and self-deprecation as defense mechanisms. "You don't know anything about me. We should hang out some more. You'll be like, 'Fuck that, this bitch is crazy.'" "I know that you carry a lot," was the reply. "I just want to take some, so you don't have to carry it all yourself." Sometimes you don't realize that the words you need to hear are the same ones you're hearing, especially right after some totally unexpected amazingness left everyone involved wondering whether or not any of it actually happened.

Fast forward to now. The in-between has been about ten percent truly self-indulgent negligence and irresponsibility and ninety percent life as usual--obligations still demanding, consciences still impossible to ignore, and now the intense overuse of the words "fun," "not serious," and "whatevs" to distract from the fact that something quite serious was happening. I've never considered highly emotional arguments and compromises made on behalf of immovable religious, political, and musical beliefs ("You like Kanye West? DEAL BREAKER") to be particularly "fun," and yet somehow, time flies.

So what have I learned so far?

-The Year of the Fun is not the Year of the Guiltless Hedonism.

-The Year of the Fun is not an excuse for refusing to entertain serious thoughts.

-The Year of the Fun is hard work.

-The Year of the Fun does not prevent things that are meant to happen from happening.

-The Year of the Fun does not supersede academic, employment, financial, ethical, or familial responsibility.

In other words, mostly shit that I already knew, and continue to relearn. It's fucking June. This abstract thing is going abstract far.

An attempt at collecting thoughts after a long/awesome/epic weekend

I should probably take this opportunity to shed a little honesty.

The no-digital-film-only pact initially put in place by this project was broken almost two months ago, when I realized that limiting creativity and doing something just for the sake of not doing it was actually pretty fucking stupid.

I have since engaged in a couple of projects in which digital was more logical or appropriate, some of which have since lost my interest, but that's okay because ideas fail sometimes. The Year of the Film is now simply a film-focused project, as well as an ongoing effort and continued reminder to experience, not document.

Taken from a private email exchange earlier this year, because I am fortunate enough to be surrounded by people who help me articulate when there is just too much for one person to manage:

"Digital is for an ADD generation, a need to fill in the gaps and capture everything before it's even experienced, but film is about voids, and living in them because life is as much about the stuff in between what happens as it is about what happens, if you know what I'm saying."

The Year of the Film (revised): a project dedicated to the time in between.

I wrote the following on February 2nd. Obviously a lot of life has happened between then and now (a topic for the next post, perhaps), but I still find this recollection of events to be accurate.

Since adopting my year of the fun/film ideology in mid-January, weekends have become consistently unpredictable, and, well, amazing.

I dragged myself away from a pleasantly uneventful Saturday night hookah session in downtown and made my way down to the docks to hang with fellow twentysomething hip-hop enthusiasts, an increasingly rare breed. What began with fights for non-valet parking spaces and the subsequent missing of favorite songs ended with camera flashes in an excited but polite crowd, little pushing and shoving as we stood shoulder to shoulder with one of the most adorable MCs ever singing along to the Sesame Street theme song, an odd yet oddly appropriate song choice.

I temporarily broke my no digital pact to take a picture for Annie, who got me into the show for free as her plus one. Love.

At Kris' recommendation, I checked out the $1.99-80s-and-90s-point-and-shoot-camera selection at Savers yesterday. Ended up leaving with two bags of yarn and an old Minolta autofocus panorama that I later realized still had an entire roll of exposed film in it. These are some of the results.

Film is a fucking adventure.

So far every person I have talked to about this project has immediately responded, I could never do that. When did it get to that point? I can’t live without my digital camera, it’s too necessary. I’ve been doing this for three days and already it’s changed the way I see everything. As a student of photography the medium already naturally has that effect; things are opening up even more now that I’m layering on restrictions. Except—I don’t feel restricted. I feel completely the opposite, like the other night at the show. If I had had my digital camera, I would have been taking tons of pictures, shooting video, constantly reviewing, oh that one didn’t come out, take another one… I would have been completely preoccupied. Being there with a plastic camera and a tiny mounted flash and the uncertainty of whether or not the film was even advancing properly freed me up to enjoy the experience rather than take pictures to show that I enjoyed the experience. It was simply, Yes. I’m here.

And then you have to drop off the film, wait for it to get developed, pick it up, cut it, scan it… The whole process, the anticipation makes it so intimate. Instead of feeling limited—I only have twelve shots, film is so expensive, I don’t know if there’s enough light—instead of hesitance and inhibition, I want to shoot. I have to take pictures tomorrow. Of what? I don’t know. But the desire is back, and that was kind of the point.
